202 Review

Three Legged Monkey
4/3/05

The Band:
David Carillo - Vocals
Luiz Enchinton - Guitar
Joe Marin - Bass
Frank - Drums

Having noticed 202 playing around town quite a bit, I was eager to catch them play. From the venues they were playing, I assumed they were a typical rock/heavy metal cover band. Doh!!! They are a cover band, all right, but most of what they cover is Spanish-language pop. I never expected to see this at the Three Legged Monkey, but I starting to hear that they have hosted all kinds of music.

202 is pretty tight, and hilarious. I can't explain what makes them so funny, but I do mean that in a positive way. Maybe I mean that there are plenty of delightful little surprises in their show. They definitely put on a professional show.

David Carillo's vocals are very nice, and not distorted. He kind of looks like Chayanne. At one point, he had his keyboard set to sound like an accordion. Luiz Enchinton's guitar was not overly-distorted. His play is quite cool, all-around. I don't know why, but the bass used by Joe Marin had seven strings. From my seat near the band, I could very clearly see that the fretboard was very, very wide, so I checked it out between sets.

The first set included a number of English-language tunes, but the second set was almost entirely in Spanish.

Songs played include the Gipsy Kings' Que si que no, Juana La Cubana, and La Bamba.

If you like Spanish-language pop, 202 is a very fun band to see.
