Cantina Flys Review

4/10/05
The Corral

The Band:
Steve Salazar - lead vocals
Ernie (AK-47) - guitar
Carlos Chavez - bass
Marco A. Rivera - drums

The Cantina Flys were the middle act in the Slunt/Cantina Flys/Gypsy Rose show Sunday night at The Corral. Boyohboyohboy, can these Hell Hounds from Hell Paso rock. They played one awesome set.

My favorite things about their show were 1) their stage presence, and 2) the drums. The thing is, though, everything they do fits together perfectly. They do what they do perfectly, flat-out. Well, I guess I do have a tiny criticism: Ernie, when playing, looks like he has his eyes closed. I don't think he does, but it looks like it. So, except for that, they're perfect.

To be sure, I'm not ready to call them the best band in the world. Maybe if they buy me a car or something. They overplay their music. As an art teacher might say, they are the opposite of minimalists. Well, I'm sure an art teacher would have a name for it. They are a great band, but to be any better, I think they'll have to loosen things up a bit.

They don't have to get better, though. They are very successful right now. They are blowing doors from Dallas to Los Angeles. They are releasing their new CD, Queremos Rock, in about a month. Check it out. For my tastes, the Cantina Flys are the best local band I have seen so far.
