Med-X Review

3/24/05
Andre's Pizza, Montwood at Saul Kleinfeld

The Band:
Danny - Drums
AJ - Guitar
Benny - Bass
Count - Vocals

I got to see Med-X play a 30-minute set in front of Andre's Pizza, Montwood at Saul Kleinfeld, after interviewing them.

The show consisted of three bands, playing to a crowd of high-school- and middle-school-aged neighborhood kids. After the first set, I was interviewing two or three members of Med-X at a time, while they waited for their bass player to come back from McDonald's with their equipment.

All of the bands used small amps, which was hopefully appreciated by the folks in the very nice houses nearby (the show took place about a mile and a half from Montwood High School). There was lively moshing by 5-8 guys at a time, as you might expect in a parking lot.

It was fairly cold outside, but Med-X played in T-shirts, except for the vocalist, Count, who started the set in a sleeveless shirt. Shortly after the start of the set, he took that off altogether. Taking one for live music.

Count, as a matter of fact, really looks like a punk-rock singer. His makeup is well-done, but much more understated than that of one of his influences, the New York Dolls, one of the pioneer punk-rock bands. The other band members have the requisite eye-liner, but their appearances don't add to the show like his does.

For not having much equipment there, the sound was fairly clean, although the guitar was a little distorted. The acoustics of a parking lot are pretty good.

The members of Med-X are young. The band has been together for two years, but there have been several personnel changes in that time. They are very loose, and still focus on having a good time, but they are surprisingly tight. I like that the guitar does more than just play jack-hammer chords.

They are playing serious gigs, frequently at Surge's, and they clearly are good enough to be doing so. If they keep it together, they should be headlining some of those shows before they know it.

AJ gave me the following info after I posted the interview:
7 bands played... my favorite band that played last nite was Underclass Society, I love those guys. Haha, and our image well we usually look "cooler" but eh we're just really lazy now. Danny doesn't like putting his hawk up and I just don't wear too much makeup like EVERY show, and Benny just kinda looks like he's 12, haha

Surge is a real cool guy, we play there a lot cause promoters who bring all the big bands in the punk scene usually have the shows there. It gets violent sometimes but that's when you know it's a good show.
