The Corral
I started my Slunt-tracking career with an invitation to go check out The Cantina
Flys, who were the middle act in a Slunt/Cantina Flys/Gypsy Rose show. Since I
was going to the show, I decided to try and get an
interview with Slunt. Whaddya
know; I got to talk to Abby Gennet for about 45 minutes on the phone on the day
of the show. In preparation for the interview, I did quite a bit of research into
Abby and Slunt.
Abby is actually quite an accomplished woman. She has been a professional photographer, did all sorts of stuff on the New York magazine, Pop Smear, was a VJ on both MTV2 and VH1, and currently hosts AOL's concerts, which are presented on broadband internet. Oh, yeah, she also fronts a rock band touring world-wide. She accomplished all this before 30; I hate to think where she'll be when she's 40.
Slunt is a mixture of several things. They kind of sound like the Go-gos, or Atomic Pink, for that matter, but with a high-energy, hard-rock edge. They definitely rock MUCH harder than either of those two bands. They also exude a lot more sexuality than the Go-gos. I'm not even going to use that word in the same sentence as Atomic Pink; hopefully their mom and dad will appreciate that.
Their show here in El Paso, at The Corral, was all this: hard rock, with plenty of sexuality and perhaps hedonism. I was having a great time, but they cut their show kind of short. Abby says they don't have that many songs prepared, but I think the answer had more to do with the fact that there were only about 30 people in the audience.
I got some photos taken of Slunt with my 12-year-old daughter after the show. Kind of amazing how intense they look onstage, but a bunch of, er, pussy cats offstage. Sorry, I couldn't pass that one up.
Anyhow, I gotta believe they put on a kick-ass show when they set their mind to it, so I will definitely see them the next time they come to town. This time, however, they left the stage without the ass being fully-kicked.
